Illinois Wesleyan University Sigma Chi Class of 62-63 Reunion

The Illinois Wesleyan University Sigma Chi Class of 62-63 held their college reunion this month with an intimidate dinner. The reunion offered an opportunity for the classmates to reconnect with old friends, learn about the people they have become, and remembering the good times they had together.

The founding founders of Sigma Chi recognized that a principle-driven lifestyle should be paramount in an individual’s lifelong quest to achieve progressive development.

The world in which they lived had a great need for ethical leaders whose core principles were based on the possession of remarkable character.

Sigma Chi’s story has been building on itself since 1855 and the Fraternity has changed dramatically since that time.

The foundation for a lifelong course of development that has since provided more than 300,000 students with the structure to understand how to make a positive influence on the world.

Principle-driven leaders are needed now more than ever before, and the fact that Sigma Chi makes a concerted effort to contribute to the development of such people is what makes the Fraternity so important today.

Joining a fraternity can be a rewarding experience. It can make your college life richer than you imagine with a built-in social network and an organization that prides itself on developing relationships. Strong bonds and relationships will tend to form, and periodic communications will enable you to stay in touch with your friends.

The sense of pride you have from belonging to a fraternity is a definite confidence boost. It helps your self-esteem, and it helps your self-worth. Experiences have the potential to be much richer when you join a fraternity, enriching the mind and the soul that leads to fantastic memories.

Digital Mammography Imaging Benefits Women of All Ages

Mammograms are still the best tool to determine if a woman has breast cancer. A mammogram can show growths in the breast when they are too small for you or your doctor to feel them.

When breast cancer is found early, it may be easier to treat or cure. Some of the most relevant advances have been the advent of 3D mammography or breast tomosynthesis which was approved by the FDA in 2011.

Just like a three-dimensional photo is more detailed and lifelike than a 2D image, digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT)—or 3D mammography—gives radiologists a clearer view of breast tissue.

And that's why this new technology has rapidly become an essential imaging tool that enhances a doctor's ability to detect early breast cancer.

Thanks to 3D mammography, radiologists can view breast images in "slices," which essentially allows them to see straight through tissue layers and makes it less likely they’ll miss an early sign of cancer.

Unlike with 2D mammograms, the 3D technology also makes it easier for radiologists to detect breast cancer that is masked by overlapping fibroglandular tissue.

Studies show that combining 3D mammograms with standard mammograms reduces the need for additional imaging and slightly increases the number of cancers detected during screening. But more study is needed to understand whether 3D mammograms may reduce the risk of dying of breast cancer more than a standard mammogram alone.

Combining a 3D mammogram with a standard mammogram can:

Reduce the need for
follow-up imaging

Detect slightly more cancers than a standard mammogram alone

Improve breast cancer detection in dense breast tissue

Additional tests for breast cancer may include an ultrasound, an MRI or, sometimes, a biopsy to remove suspicious cells for testing in a lab by doctors who specialize in analyzing body tissue (pathology testing).

Think Pink! October Breast Cancer Awareness and Prevention

Every October, people all over the world show their support for everyone affected by breast cancer.

Founded in 2010 and offered year round, AmpliVox’s Pink Podium Promise donates special pink versions our Pinnacle Podiums to licensed or certified breast cancer awareness organizations to help their voices be heard.

The Pink Podiums were distributed to hundreds of cancer society chapters, foundations, hospitals and local governments.

"AmpliVox products are designed to make people look good and sound good," said AmpliVox CEO Don Roth.

The Pink Podium presents a dramatic visual reinforcement of the color that has come to be associated with breast cancer awareness and prevention.

There is no sure way to prevent breast cancer. But there are things you can do that might lower your risk. Many risk factors are beyond your control, such as being born female and getting older. But other risk factors can be changed and may lower your risk.

The food you eat, the substances you’re exposed to, and your level of physical activity impact your body’s production and function of hormones, inflammatory substances and immune factors that have the power to promote… or prevent cancer.

Ways to Prevent Breast Cancer
The following is a list that may help keep you from developing breast cancer. It is not a guarantee that you won't get breast cancer. However, by following these strategies you may lower your odds of getting breast cancer and you may also improve your overall health.

Screening
Remember to get annual mammograms and clinical breast exams beginning at 40.
Exercise
Engage in moderately intense physical activity for at least 30 minutes on 5 days or more.
Nutrition
Eat five or more servings of fruit and vegetables, limiting processed and red meats. Choose whole grains.

Weight
Women who gained 20 pounds or more as an adult are 40 percent more likely to develop breast cancer.
Alcohol
Drinking even small amounts of alcohol is linked with an increased risk of breast cancer in women.
Smoking
Smoking is linked to a higher risk of breast cancer in younger, premenopausal women.

Genetic
About 5% to 10% of breast cancers are thought to be hereditary, caused by abnormal genes.
Breast-feed
Breast-feeding might play a role, the longer you breast-feed, the greater the protective effect.
MHT
Menopausal Hormone Therapy
(MHT) studies have concluded that the risks often outweigh the benefits.
