Ways to Prevent Breast Cancer
The following is a list that may help keep you from developing breast cancer. It is not a guarantee that you won't get breast cancer. However, by following these strategies you may lower your odds of getting breast cancer and you may also improve your overall health.
Screening
Remember to get annual mammograms and clinical breast exams beginning at 40.
Exercise
Engage in moderately intense physical activity for at least 30 minutes on 5 days or more.
Nutrition
Eat five or more servings of fruit and vegetables, limiting processed and red meats. Choose whole grains.
Weight
Women who gained 20 pounds or more as an adult are 40 percent more likely to develop breast cancer.
Alcohol
Drinking even small amounts of alcohol is linked with an increased risk of breast cancer in women.
Smoking
Smoking is linked to a higher risk of breast cancer in younger, premenopausal women.
Genetic
About 5% to 10% of breast cancers are thought to be hereditary, caused by abnormal genes.
Breast-feed
Breast-feeding might play a role, the longer you breast-feed, the greater the protective effect.
MHT
Menopausal Hormone Therapy (MHT) studies have concluded that the risks often outweigh the benefits.
