Eye Patch Days: Raising Awareness for Ocular Melanoma

As part of Melanoma Awareness Month, the Ocular Melanoma Foundation (OMF) is proud to support the annual Eye Patch Days to increase awareness of ocular melanoma and the need for dilated eye exams.

OMF Warriors around the globe will wear eye patches to raise awareness for ocular melanoma.

Wearing an eye patch is a great way to start a conversation with co-workers, friends and neighbors about OM and how important it is to see an ophthalmologist regularly.

Ocular Melanoma is a heartbreaking cancer that takes many loved ones from us way too soon.

We encourage you to share the memory of your special person by wearing an eye patch and spreading the word in their honor.

In Memory of Nancy Roth – a Personal Story
By Don Roth, CEO AmpliVox

On September 4, 2018, my wife Nancy Roth lost her six-year battle with ocular melanoma.

This rare disease, which occurs in 2,000 adults each year, currently has no cure in its metastatic form.

AmpliVox CEO Don Roth still gets understandably emotional about his wife Nancy’s six-year fight against ocular melanoma, which she lost in September 2018, despite countless doctor’s visits, expert opinions and treatments.

But while Roth will likely never truly get over the loss of his wife of 52 years, he’s figured out a proactive way to make the best of it by working to raise money to find a cure for the disease that took Nancy’s life at age 76.

Roth has led efforts to raise about $35,000 for the Eye Tumor Research Foundation and the Ocular Melanoma Foundation through a GoFundMe fundraising page as well as partnerships with local restaurants and neighborhood businesses near AmpliVox’s headquarters in the Chicago area.

Among the local restaurants to donate portions of their proceeds to Roth’s fundraising efforts are City Barbecue, Eddie Merlot and The Warehouse, but they’re not the only ones, he says.

"My dedication and my goal is to raise money in many, many different ways for the Eye Tumor Research Foundation," says Roth.

AmpliVox employees “have all been very supportive in every way," he says, as have the company’s customers and suppliers.

"There will always be a little hole in my heart. They fill the gap when all of these people are so supportive," says Roth.

"Our customers and our suppliers and our employees have made our lives worthwhile."

"They’ve made what we’re doing worthwhile."

"Many of them have been very generous," says Roth, noting AmpliVox also includes information about donating to the effort on its purchase orders and invoices "to get the word out".

Roth has offered to match donations at various times as well in hopes of generating as much support as possible.

AmpliVox Honors Nurses Week with Free Megaphone to Senior Centers

AmpliVox Sound Systems, a long-time supporter of first responders and medical personnel, salutes National Nurses Week with the offer of a free AmpliVox megaphone to senior health care centers.

"We enthusiastically salute our nation’s nurses who have done a spectacular job caring for COVID patients and protecting the public," said AmpliVox CEO Don Roth.

"One example is our friend Karen Mueller, a nurse at a Chicago metropolitan health care system. Her story is typical of so many health care workers during the past year."

"It’s been so tough," said Mueller. "During the pandemic, I have specialized in ‘vascular access,’ which means that I’ve done a lot of I.V. lines for many very ill COVID patients and seen a lot of them in serious enough condition to be put on not only ventilators, but also ECMO (Extra Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation) machines, which basically act as artificial lungs.

And, even many patients who recovered and were released continue to feel serious after effects of the disease.

"Meanwhile, we’ve also had to deal with medical conditions that always occur, such as heart attacks, strokes, and other emergencies.

It’s been extremely tough on all health care personnel; some of them are stressed enough to have suffered their own trauma. But so many health care workers have been truly heroic."

Said Roth, "Because seniors have suffered such a disproportionate share of COVID-related problems, we want to do what we can to help senior centers."

The free megaphone is available through June 30 2021 to bona fide senior health care centers (limit one free megaphone per site, please.)

The megaphone, AmpliVox Mini-Meg Model S600NR projects strong, clear sound up to 100 yards and to those with hearing impairment.

It weighs just two pounds, has a built-in siren and fold-up handle.

It works from 4 D cell batteries, providing up to 20 hours of continuous talk time.

To get the free megaphone call AmpliVox at
(847) 404-8224 and ask for Don Roth.
